Living there is a different set of rules, with its own deadlines — and most of them start counting from the day you arrive. This is the sequence, drawn from current UK government guidance.

📜 Based on gov.uk guidance

⏰ Deadlines start on arrival

🇬🇧 Written for British nationals

90 daysVisa-Free In Any 180-Day Period

150 daysMin. According to the FCDO’s current entry requirements for Turkey, you can visit Turkey without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, for business or tourism, provided your passport has an expiry date at least 150 days after the date you arrive and at least one blank page. No application, no fee, no appointment. For a great many people that is the entire extent of their dealings with Turkish officialdom, for years at a time.

That ease is exactly what makes relocating harder than it looks. The visa-free arrangement is a visitor arrangement. It does not entitle you to live in Turkey, it does not entitle you to work there, and it does not roll over. If you intend to stay beyond the 90 days, you need a residence permit — and the application has to be made before the visa-free allowance runs out, not afterwards. People who treat the move as a gradual drift from long holidays into permanent life are the ones who end up with a problem, because the deadline arrives whether or not they have engaged with it.

The second thing worth understanding early is that several separate clocks start running once you arrive or once your permit is issued, and they run in parallel rather than in sequence. There is a deadline for registering your address. There is a deadline for your driving licence. There is a qualifying period before you can join the Turkish health system, and a requirement to be insured in the meantime. None of these are difficult individually. They become difficult when they are discovered late and all at once.

The one habit that makes this straightforward: treat your arrival date as the start of a checklist rather than the end of a journey. Every obligation below is easy to satisfy on time and awkward to satisfy late. Write the dates down on the day you land.

This guide sets out what British nationals actually have to do, in the order it has to happen, drawing on the UK government’s own guidance for people living in Türkiye. It deliberately does not quote permit fees, insurance premiums, income thresholds or tax rates. Those change frequently, they vary by permit type and by province, and a figure repeated from an out-of-date guide is worse than no figure at all. Where a number matters, we say where to get the current one.

Property is often the reason for the move rather than a consequence of it. If you are still at that stage, our guides to the best places to live in Turkey and the cost of living in Turkey are the natural place to start, and whether foreigners can buy property in Turkey answers the ownership question directly.

British Nationals — Key Requirements

From current UK government guidance

Visa-free stay90 days / any 180 days

Passport validity150+ days on arrival

Blank pages neededAt least 1

Longer staysResidence permit required

Address registrationWithin 20 working days

Reciprocal healthcareNone with the UK

Health insuranceRequired

Turkish health systemAfter 1 year’s residence

UK driving licenceValid for 6 months

After 6 monthsMust exchange for Turkish

Double taxation treatyUK–Turkey in place

Dual citizenshipRecognised by Turkey

Health cover is the one to sort before you travel, not after. UK government guidance is explicit that there is no reciprocal healthcare agreement between the UK and Turkey, and that you should make sure you have appropriate health insurance to cover any healthcare costs.
