On everyday consumption &mdash; a coffee, a cheap meal out, an internet connection &mdash; Istanbul and Antalya are close enough that the difference would not change anybody&rsquo;s mind about where to live. A cappuccino differs by a few lira. Broadband differs by around thirty.<\/p>\n      <p>On housing, the two cities are barely in the same market. A three-bedroom city-centre apartment in Istanbul was roughly double the Antalya figure on the dates retrieved. On commuting, a monthly Istanbul transport pass was around two and a half times the Antalya equivalent. Those two lines, together, account for most of the gap between the cities.<\/p>\n      <p>This has a practical consequence that is easy to miss. If you are comparing cities on the strength of a single &lsquo;cost of living&rsquo; percentage, you are averaging together one category where the difference is enormous and several where it is negligible &mdash; and the resulting number describes neither. What actually determines your monthly outgoing is which city you rent in, which district within it, and whether you need to commute across it.<\/p>\n      <div class=\"cl-hbox\"><strong>A useful way to think about it.<\/strong> Decide the district first and the city budget second. In both Istanbul and Antalya the spread between central and outlying neighbourhoods is wider than the spread between the two cities&rsquo; national averages. Fixed broadband internet was around 768 TL a month in Istanbul and around 737 TL in Antalya. Numbeo calculates its utilities figure against a standard 85 square metre reference apartment, so scale it to the size of the place you are actually considering.
