the obligations left out. This one is a ledger. What genuinely changes in your legal position, what passes to your children, what the passport does not do — and the duty that catches male applicants out.

👪 Passes to children by descent

💼 No work permit required

🇺🇷 Dual nationality permitted

Art. 66Child Of A Turk Is A Turk

DualSecond Nationality Permitted

20–41Male Military Service Age Range

No EUSchengen Visa Still Required

        Start Here

The real benefit is that you stop being a foreigner

Almost every published list of the benefits of Turkish citizenship opens with travel. That is the least interesting thing about it, and as we set out in our guide to Turkish passport visa-free countries, it is also the part most often oversold. The substantive change is quieter and much larger: Turkish law stops treating you as a foreign national.

That single shift does most of the work. The ownership caps that apply to foreign buyers are written as limits on foreign individuals, so they cease to apply. The work permit requirement that governs foreign employment falls away. Access to the state healthcare and social security system, and to public education, follows from citizenship rather than from a permit that has to be renewed. And the status is not personal to you — under Article 66 of the Turkish Constitution, the child of a Turkish parent is a Turk, so what you acquire becomes generational.

          The honest framing. Turkish citizenship is a strong instrument for people who want a durable second nationality, a family position and a genuine foothold in Turkey. It is a weak instrument for people who want to live or travel freely in Europe. Deciding which of those you are is the whole of the analysis, and it is better done before a property is bought than after.

There is also an obligation side to the ledger, and it is routinely omitted from marketing material. Military service is a constitutional duty for male Turkish citizens. Acquiring another nationality later carries a notification requirement. Citizenship can affect how you are treated for tax purposes, which interacts with your position at home. None of these are reasons not to proceed. They are reasons to proceed with your eyes open.

What follows is the full ledger: what changes on naturalisation, the six benefits that actually matter, a side-by-side comparison of a foreign owner against a Turkish citizen, and the obligations that come attached. For citizens holding more than one nationality, the obligation lapses where they have already served in the armed forces of another state. Turkey has also operated a paid exemption, bedelli, since 25 June 2019: conscripts resident abroad complete an online course from the Ministry of National Defence before making the payment, and the amount is revised twice a year in line with inflation.

          If you have sons, take advice before you apply, not after. Because the assessment depends on age and status at the date of naturalisation, the timing of a family application can materially change the position of a teenage son. You stop being a foreign national in Turkish law, which removes the ownership limits that apply to foreigners and the requirement to hold a work permit. You gain access to the state healthcare and social security system and to public education, with public universities free to Turkish citizens. Citizenship passes to your children: Article 66 of the Turkish Constitution provides that the child of a Turkish parent is a Turk, so the status you acquire becomes a family asset rather than a personal one. Turkey permits dual nationality, so in most cases none of this requires you to give anything up. And because eligibility for the US E-2 treaty investor visa follows nationality rather than residence, Turkish citizenship opens a US business route that most nationalities cannot use at all.

Does Turkish citizenship remove the property restrictions that apply to foreigners?+

Yes, because those restrictions are written as limits on foreign individuals, and a Turkish citizen is not one. A foreign national may hold no more than 30 hectares of land in total across Turkey and no more than 10 per cent of the surface area of any one district; cannot acquire property inside prohibited military zones; and needs permission from the governor's office for property in special security zones. Purchases by foreigners also run through additional checks, including a military clearance confirming the property is not in a restricted zone. None of that framework is addressed to citizens. For most buyers of a single apartment or villa the caps were never going to bite in the first place, so this matters mainly to people assembling land or building a larger portfolio — but it is a real change in legal position rather than a marketing point.

Do I have to give up my current nationality to become Turkish?+

Turkey does not require it. Dual citizenship is permitted under Turkish law, and Turkish citizens are not asked to choose between nationalities on reaching adulthood. There is an administrative obligation running the other way: a Turkish citizen who acquires another nationality is required to inform the relevant Turkish authority and to provide supporting documents including the naturalisation certificate. The question that actually decides the matter is usually not Turkish law but the law of your existing country, because some states do not permit their nationals to hold a second citizenship and treat acquisition of another nationality as grounds for loss of the first. That is a question for a lawyer in your own jurisdiction, not for a Turkish adviser.

Will my children get Turkish citizenship?+

Children acquire Turkish citizenship by descent. Article 66 of the Turkish Constitution states that the child of a Turkish parent is a Turk, and citizenship is acquired from birth where the child is born to a Turkish mother or father. This applies to children born after you naturalise. Where citizenship is obtained through the investment route, the application itself can include a spouse and children under eighteen, so the family position is settled at the point of naturalisation rather than needing separate applications later. Children born to you afterwards take the status by descent in the ordinary way. The practical significance is that the decision you are making is generational, which is a stronger argument for the programme than the travel access usually cited for it.

Does Turkish citizenship mean military service?+

It can, and this is the obligation prospective applicants most often fail to check. Military service is a constitutional duty for male Turkish citizens. Under the Military Service Law, men are registered from 1 January of the year in which they turn twenty and remain liable until 1 January of the year in which they turn forty-one. For men who acquire citizenship by naturalisation, the position depends on their circumstances at the date of naturalisation, and there are established routes out: those who have already completed military service in another country may be exempted on application, and for citizens holding more than one nationality the obligation lapses where they have already served in the armed forces of another country. Turkey has also operated a paid exemption, known as bedelli, since 25 June 2019; conscripts resident abroad complete an online course from the Ministry of National Defence before payment, and the amount is adjusted twice a year in line with inflation. Because the assessment turns on age and status at naturalisation, any male applicant with sons approaching twenty should take specific advice before applying rather than relying on a general rule.

Does a Turkish passport let me live or travel freely in Europe?+

No, and this is the most common misconception attached to the programme. Holders of ordinary Turkish passports require a visa to enter the Schengen Area, and Turkey is the only EU candidate country whose citizens still need visas to travel to European Union member states. The United Kingdom, the United States, Canada and Australia also require visas in advance. Turkish citizenship confers no right to live or work in an EU country. What the passport does carry is broad access elsewhere, most often quoted as 113 destinations on the Henley Passport Index, together with the US E-2 treaty investor route. If free movement in Europe is your objective, Turkish citizenship is the wrong instrument and you should look at a European programme instead.

    Keep Reading

Where to go next

The programme, the passport, and the practical questions that follow naturalisation.

🇮🇰
Citizenship by investment

The real-estate route, step by step →

✈️
What the passport opens

Turkish passport visa-free countries →

📋
Dual nationality

Does Turkey allow dual citizenship? →

💍
The marriage route

Turkish citizenship by marriage →

💵
Tax position

Taxes in Turkey for foreigners →

📚
The full library

Turkey property guides →

      A note on figures. Citizenship thresholds, holding periods, military service rules and tax treatment all change, and several have been revised more than once in recent years. The question that actually decides the matter is usually not Turkish law but the law of your existing country, because some states do not permit their nationals to hold a second citizenship and treat acquisition of another nationality as grounds for loss of the first. That is a question for a lawyer in your own jurisdiction, not for a Turkish adviser."
      }
    },
    {
      "@type": "Question",
      "name": "Will my children get Turkish citizenship?",
      "acceptedAnswer": {
        "@type": "Answer",
        "text": "Children acquire Turkish citizenship by descent. The practical significance is that the decision you are making is generational, which is a stronger argument for the programme than the travel access usually cited for it."
      }
    },
    {
      "@type": "Question",
      "name": "Does Turkish citizenship mean military service?",
      "acceptedAnswer": {
        "@type": "Answer",
        "text": "It can, and this is the obligation prospective applicants most often fail to check. Because the assessment turns on age and status at naturalisation, any male applicant with sons approaching twenty should take specific advice before applying rather than relying on a general rule."
      }
    },
    {
      "@type": "Question",
      "name": "Does a Turkish passport let me live or travel freely in Europe?",
      "acceptedAnswer": {
        "@type": "Answer",
        "text": "No, and this is the most common misconception attached to the programme. If free movement in Europe is your objective, Turkish citizenship is the wrong instrument and you should look at a European programme instead."
      }
    }
  ]
}

Most accounts of Turkish citizenship list the benefits and leave out the obligations.
