Your own country decides the rest.<\/h2>\n        <p>The short answer is yes, and it is worth being precise about where that answer comes from. Turkey&rsquo;s position on multiple nationality is not an administrative practice that shifts with the political weather. It is written into the <strong>Turkish Citizenship Law No. 5901<\/strong>, adopted on 29 May 2009 and published in the Official Gazette on 12 June 2009 under number 27256, and it has two components that people routinely confuse with each other.<\/p>\n        <p>The first is definitional. Article 3(1)(b) of the law defines <em>multi citizenship<\/em> as the status of a Turkish citizen who possesses more than one citizenship at the same time. A statute does not ordinarily define a status it intends to prohibit. The second is procedural. Article 44 sets out what happens when a Turkish citizen acquires the citizenship of another state: on submission of documents showing their status, and following an inquiry establishing that the individual is the same individual as contained in the records, an explanatory note is attached to the family registry stating that the person has multiple citizenship.<\/p>\n        <p>Read those together and the shape of Turkish policy is clear. Multiple nationality is <strong>registered, not penalised<\/strong>. There is no provision anywhere in Law No. 5901 requiring a foreign national who acquires Turkish citizenship to renounce the nationality they already hold. Renunciation appears in the law only in the opposite direction &mdash; Articles 25 to 27, which deal with Turkish citizens who want to give Turkish citizenship up.<\/p>\n        <div class=\"dc-hbox\"><strong>The distinction that saves people trouble:<\/strong> Turkey granting permission and your home country granting permission are two separate questions decided by two separate legal systems. Turkey will not consult your government, will not notify it, and will not decide on its behalf. A great many people who believe they hold two nationalities have never actually checked the second half of the equation.<\/div>\n        <p>That asymmetry is where almost every real problem originates. Nationality law worldwide falls into roughly three camps: states that permit multiple nationality freely, states that permit it only in defined circumstances such as acquisition by birth or marriage, and states that treat the voluntary acquisition of a foreign nationality as an act that ends their own automatically. This is the only step in the sequence that Turkey has no say over, and the only one that can quietly undo everything else. Ask your own consulate or a nationality lawyer in your home jurisdiction, and get the answer in writing.<\/p><\/div>\n      <\/div>\n      <div class=\"dc-step\">\n        <div class=\"dc-step-num\">2<\/div>\n        <div class=\"dc-step-body\"><h3>Identify which route you are actually on<\/h3><p>Law No. 5901 provides several distinct paths, and they carry different conditions. Article 11 covers general naturalisation. Article 12 covers exceptional acquisition by resolution of the President of the Republic, which is the provision investors are routed through. Article 16 covers marriage, and Article 7 covers descent. Applying under the wrong heading is a common and entirely avoidable delay.<\/p><\/div>\n      <\/div>\n      <div class=\"dc-step\">\n        <div class=\"dc-step-num\">3<\/div>\n        <div class=\"dc-step-body\"><h3>Assemble the file and lodge it<\/h3><p>Under Article 18, whether an applicant meets the conditions in Articles 11 and 16 is determined by citizenship application examination commissions formed in the provinces. Turkish citizenship is not backdated to the application, and it does not depend on a passport being collected. While you are in Turkey as a Turkish citizen, expect to be treated as one.<\/p><\/div>\n      <div class=\"dc-pc\"><span class=\"dc-pc-icon\">&#127894;&#65039;<\/span><h3>Military service attaches<\/h3><p>Service obligations follow Turkish citizenship. Article 25(1)(c) makes an outstanding service obligation a bar to renouncing, and Article 28(2) confirms that those who left via a renunciation permit carry no such duty. Article 15 softens the residence rule slightly: an applicant may stay abroad without exceeding twelve months within the required residence period, a figure raised from six months by Law No. 7039 of 19 October 2017.<\/p>\n      <p><strong>Article 12<\/strong> is the exceptional route, and it works quite differently. It allows named categories of foreign nationals to acquire Turkish citizenship by resolution of the President of the Republic, provided they have no quality constituting an obstacle with respect to national security and public order. Sub-paragraph (b), added by Law No. 7039 of 19 October 2017, extends it to persons with residence permits, Turquoise Card holders, and their alien spouses and underage and dependent alien children, by reference to Article 31(1)(j) of Law No. 6458 on Foreigners and International Protection of 4 April 2013. That cross-reference is the legal hook on which the property investment route hangs. Notice what the article does <em>not<\/em> contain: no residence period, and no renunciation requirement.<\/p>\n      <p>Note also that fulfilling the conditions is not the same as being entitled to the outcome. Article 10(1) states plainly that fulfilment of the stipulated conditions does not grant that person an absolute right in the acquisition of citizenship. Those people continue to benefit from the same rights accorded to Turkish citizens, with defined exceptions set out in the article itself: they do not have the right to vote and be elected, the right to import exempted vehicles and household goods, or the duty for performing military service, and they may not be employed in principal and continuous public services based on permanent staffing, though they may be employed as workers, temporary or contracted personnel. Crucially, the Blue Card is for people who gave Turkish citizenship up. Article 31 provides that a decision granting Turkish citizenship shall be cancelled by the decision-making authority if the person acquired it by misrepresentation or by hiding the key issues which form a basis for the acquisition. Article 32 extends that cancellation to a spouse and children who acquired Turkish citizenship through their links with that person. Article 33 then applies the law on the travel and residence of foreigners to anyone whose citizenship is cancelled, and provides that where liquidation of belongings is deemed necessary and stated in the cancellation decision, the person must liquidate their belongings in Turkey within one year at the latest, failing which the Treasury sells them and deposits the proceeds in their name at a state bank.
