The commute is a real factor rather than an inconvenience: living twenty minutes from where you need to be and an hour and twenty are two entirely different lives. The weather is the other surprise. Istanbul is not Mediterranean; it is a cool, damp, often grey city for a good part of the year. People who move there for the sunshine they saw in Antalya photographs are consistently disappointed.<\/p>\n      <h3>Where foreign residents actually live<\/h3>\n      <p>On the European side, Besiktas, Sisli, Nisantasi, Etiler and Bebek carry most of the established international population, at the highest prices in the country. On the Asian side, Kadikoy and Moda have become the default for younger arrivals and remote workers, offering a walkable, cafe-dense neighbourhood culture at a meaningful discount; further east, Atasehir and the Bagdat Caddesi corridor are more suburban and family-oriented.<\/p>\n      <p>Istanbul is also where the neighbourhood restriction question mattered most. The practical consequence is that Alanya is unusually easy to arrive into: there are foreign-language doctors, agents, accountants and social clubs, and a newcomer can function from day one. It is also the most affordable of the major coastal centres. The trade-off is that the centre is heavily built up, the summer is intense, and the town's own airport at Gazipasa is small &mdash; many residents still use Antalya. This stretch &mdash; Fethiye, Oludeniz, Kalkan, Kas and the villages between them &mdash; has the longest-established British and northern European residential communities in Turkey.<\/p>\n      <h3>Fethiye<\/h3>\n      <p>Fethiye is the practical centre of the region and the one place on this coast that functions as a normal town rather than a resort. It has a large working harbour, a proper market, hospitals, schools and a resident Turkish population that does not leave, so the shops, the doctors and the social life carry on through the winter. The foreign community is long-settled rather than transient, and Dalaman airport is close enough to be genuinely convenient. Around the town, Calis is the flatter beachside option, Ovacik and Hisaronu sit up the hill and are more seasonal, and Uzumlu is the inland village choice. Kalkan is a steep, white-washed town of villas stacked above a small bay, heavily oriented towards high-end holiday letting, and in winter it is very quiet indeed. Kas is larger, more bohemian and more year-round, with a diving and outdoor culture that gives it life beyond the season. Both are two and a half to three hours from either Dalaman or Antalya airport, the single most underestimated factor in living there. They are wonderful places to own and demanding places to live full-time, particularly if you need regular medical care. It is where affluent Turkish families from Istanbul and Ankara have their second homes, which means the summer culture is domestic rather than package-tourist, the food and design standards are noticeably higher, and the prices reflect it.<\/p>\n      <h3>Bodrum peninsula<\/h3>\n      <p>Bodrum is not a town but a peninsula of a dozen distinct villages, and the differences between them are larger than between some of the regions on this page. Yalikavak is the marina and luxury end, Turkbuku the fashionable summer scene, Gumusluk the low-rise sunset village; Bodrum town itself is the working centre with the castle and the ferries. Milas&ndash;Bodrum airport serves the whole peninsula. The seasonal swing is the thing to understand: Bodrum in August is one of the most expensive and crowded places in Turkey, and in January the outlying villages are close to empty. It is the country's third city, on the water, with a long cosmopolitan history, a seafront promenade people actually use, a full range of hospitals and universities, its own international airport at Adnan Menderes, and a cost base well below Istanbul's. Alsancak, Karsiyaka and Bostanli carry most of the urban residential interest, while the Urla and Cesme corridor to the west offers vineyard country, sailing and a weekend-house culture within an hour of the city. For the right person it is the best value in the country by a wide margin. Ankara is the capital and a large university city, well connected by air and high-speed rail; Bursa sits at the foot of Uludag with a ski season and thermal springs; Eskisehir is a young, walkable, tram-served university city rated among the most liveable in Turkey by Turks themselves. The caveats are real winters with snow and heating bills that matter, far less spoken English, and a foreign community small enough that you will build a life among Turkish neighbours rather than join an existing expatriate structure.<\/p>\n      <div class=\"bp-warn\">\n        <p><strong>A note on earthquakes.<\/strong> Turkey is seismically active and the risk is not evenly distributed, but building quality matters at least as much as location. Whatever region you choose, the age of the building, its construction date relative to the current building code, and whether the structure has been properly assessed are more informative than any general regional statement. According to the Presidency of Migration Management (Goc Idaresi Baskanligi), that closed-neighbourhood restriction in Istanbul was lifted with effect from 10 June 2026, and the e-ikamet system now accepts applications from areas that were previously blocked. Two caveats matter. The policy is density-driven rather than permanent legislation, so neighbourhoods can in principle be restricted again.
